What associations does this term evoke in you?
The food system consist of a wide-array of actors, the first step is the growing demand which is answered by primary/secondary producers, food itself goes through a dozens of steps, depending on the level of processing, packaging, distribution and the last is after consumption, dealing with foodwaste and waste management.
All participants have to cooperate with various other stakeholders, like agricultural, medical, marketing and political sector.
The food system is a complex set of actors and their relationships. To understand the food system power, interest and multi-scalarity are key concepts for me.
It is the life-cycle of the food I either put on the table or consume when eating out and every participant that touches it on its way. From the moment it gets grown, through production and procedure, packaging, transport, preparation and the environment it gets consumed, through the management of leftovers and waste.
The system starts from the production of vegetables and the breeding of animals, then it goes though production, packaging, disctribution, advertising, logistics and ends up on the market/store selves, where people buy it. Then they go home, prepare a meal and then produce food waste. People also enjoy eating out, hence the restaurant (feeding) industry is also part of the system.
The food system is very complex. It can be interpreted in more ways, like:
The food system is the circle of living beings, like plants, herbivores, predators etc.
From a human perspective, the food system is a process, where food is produced, treated, sold, consumed, cooked, ate… This system contains several stakeholders, levels, elements.
